Seongnaecheon

  • Seongnaecheon is a stream that flows to the Hangang River traversing Macheon-dong, Ogeum-dong and Pungnap-dong.The image of Songpa as a city of water is attributed to the transformation of the Seongnaecheon Stream. The restoration project launched in 2002 has slowly transformed the waterway into a nature-friendly stream once again attracting bees, butterflies, birds and racoons. Now inhabited by marsh snails that can only live in clean waters, the waterway has transformed into a place allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of nature. Currently, the stream is home to 36 species of birds including herons, seven species of fish including stone moroko and 126 species of insects including ladybugs. With wall fountains and a jar-shaped swimming pool, the stream has become a popular summer destination where some 10,000 people a day come visit in the middle of summer. Selected as one of the "100 Most Beautiful Korean Rivers and Streams" by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport in 2009, the stream is a true treasure of Songpa.
